Responding to Asexual Hate Comments
Sometimes people are mean to me about being Asexual on the internet. So let’s use that as a teachable moment, shall we?

Bullied for Being Asexual – It Gets Better UK

After being bullied for most of my time in education, it is an issue close to my heart! I was asked to film a video for It Gets Better UK, whose goal is to prevent suicide among LGBTQ+ youth, and I thought I’d share it on my channel as well! I hope it helps someone.

QAC 60 – Race, Culture & [A]sexuality: Support Asexual People Of Color
Asexual Awareness Week is a week set aside in October to not only show your pride as an asexual person, but to help raise awareness of asexuality and asexual people. sadly, some of the people who are most in need of increased awareness and resources are those who go unnoticed even within the asexual community itself.

it’s no secret that the Asexual Community, particularly in English-speaking countries, has a Whiteness Problem. or at least, i hope that it isn’t. there is more often than not a distinct lack of racial / ethnic diversity in asexual communities and spaces, which is why it ought to surprise no one that there is also a lack of resources and even awareness among fellow aces about the unique and diverse struggles and needs of aces of color.

with the bulk of asexual awareness, resources and discourse revolving around white faces and common narratives that are themself often derived from a uniquely white experience of what it is to be asexual, where is the support and inclusion for those for whom their racial, ethnic and / or cultural identity/ies inform their ace identity?

there are glaring ways in which asexual awareness efforts, activism and the asexual community in general have failed and continue to fail me as someone who is simultaneously asexual and black . it’s my hope that we all can work together towards a future where there will no longer be aces of color who find themselves on the outskirts of a community that claims to be welcoming and inclusive.

Instead of spending a little time on a couple of drawings, I decided to spend a lot of time on ONE drawing and make it really good. I’d like to make more of these characters in the future when I have time. If I do, I’ll link them here.

Acephobia from within the LGBT+ community | Slice of Ace
The second of my Pride 2020 videos is a rant about LGBT+ folk being aphobic. Sorry if it got a bit negative. We’ll be back to my regularly-scheduled positivity next week 🙂

Asexual Bingo

Sometimes silly, sometimes serious, and always with lots of bad language and inappropriate graphics, here is a capsule view of the kinds of comments I get on my YouTube videos and through other channels regarding asexuality. And keeping track of how much fail I encountered was made easier with the handy-dandy Asexual Bingo card. (Believe me, I’ve heard EVERYTHING on it, but I had to cut a lot of stuff even to make this video.) If nothing else, this should give you an idea of how often certain sentiments are expressed and why these people’s knee-jerk condescending comments are not helping anyone and certainly aren’t doing much but making them look like their anger and frustration toward me for not wanting to have sex is way out of proportion for what people should be expressing about some stranger’s sex life.

The opening song is “Isabella” by the Mediæval Bæbes. And yes, I am really the age I say I am in the video. And thank you, yes my hair is pretty awesome.

Shit People Say to Asexuals

Need more info on asexuality? I have a book out. Buy or borrow a copy of The Invisible Orientation: http://juliesondradecker.com/?page_id…
Want to know more about why these statements/questions are inappropriate? Read the info sheet with explanations:

If we come out to you, we probably don’t mind discussing our orientation, but pretty much anything recited in this video is probably a bad idea to say to us. . . . Don’t be afraid to talk to us or ask questions, but sometimes on the sensitive topics, you might be better off doing your own research. You may also like these for further reading/watching:

Letters to an Asexual #68 (“I don’t HATE aces; I pity them!”)

This is #68 of a series in which I read correspondence between me and people who have questions, comments, or–more often–misconceptions about asexuality. In this video, I read some comments on a mainstream media article where the fellow argues that nobody should hate or harass asexuals; we should all just feel sorry for them, and by no means should we treat them like this is a normal enough way to be. The difference must be acknowledged or someone might get the idea that it’s okay to live like that or something! Sheesh! 😀
